Ambassador of Japan Awards Commendation to ELAC Co-Director Dapo Akande

Dapo Akande, ELAC Co-Director and Chichele Professor of Public International Law at the University of Oxford, was awarded a commendation by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the United Kingdom, Hajime Hayashi. The event took place at the Embassy of Japan in London.

The Ambassador’s Commendation was awarded to Professor Akande “…for his outstanding contribution to the progressive development of international law and his tremendous support for Japan’s efforts in strengthening the rule of law.”

Ambassador Hayashi praised Professor Akande’s role in the development of international law through his research, practice, and teaching as well as his participation in the work of international organisations, including his membership of the UN International Law Commission, his UN Security Council briefings, and his global educational efforts in public international law. He noted Professor Akande’s keynote lecture at the first Tokyo International Law Seminar at the United Nations University in Tokyo in August 2023 was highly admired by participating officials and legal experts from Asia and Africa.

Ambassador Hayashi concluded his remarks by stating the “… utmost appreciation to Professor Akande for his dedication to legal studies and his determination to promote peaceful, positive, and fair relations between countries through public international law.”
