On 23 March, IPS Visiting Fellow of Practice Nina Donaghy held a behind-the-scenes access film to the first high-profile Syrian war crimes trial of colonel Anwar Raslan, accused of crimes against humanity. The historic trail began in Germany in April 2020, with the verdict announced on January 13, 2022, sentencing Raslan to life in prison. Raslan’s conviction could be a first step toward more comprehensive accountability for the Syrian regime, an increasing number of high-ranking military officers begin to be arrested and charged across Europe
