ELAC Co-Director Professor Janina Dill recently spoke with DW News about her latest Foreign Affairs article, “Greeted as Liberators,” examining the role of local consent in debates over military intervention.

In the interview, Professor Dill discusses claims that populations subjected to intervention welcome external military action, the research underpinning her analysis, and what these questions mean for contemporary cases including Iran and Cuba.

Drawing on research with Emily Myers and Livia Schubiger, Professor Dill argues that local consent matters not only for the legitimacy of intervention, but also for public support for military action. The findings suggest that people are more likely to support intervention when they believe it is welcomed by those directly affected.
