Mar 29, 2022

On 28-29 March, ELAC Deputy Director Federica D’Alessandra, IPS Visiting Fellow of Practice Kirsty Sutherland, and IPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow Ross James Gildea attended OSCE’s Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting, organised by OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and The Polish Chairmanship. The event provided a platform for an exchange of views among OSCE participating states, OSCE institutions and other executive structures and international organizations, as well as civil society and other stakeholders, on international co-operation to address ongoing violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, including in Ukraine. It included three working sessions on: (i) requirements and application of international humanitarian law and international human rights law; (ii) investigation and documentation of international humanitarian and human rights law violations; and (iii) digital technologies that support human rights defenders. Speakers included Ukrainian human rights lawyer Oleksandra MatviychukNerma Jelacic of the Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA), Professor Gloria Gaggioli, and human rights and technology expert Samuel Dubberley, among others.

On 29 March, Kirsty Sutherland and Ross Gildea also represented IPS at a commemorative event for the Argentine National Day for Memory, Truth and Justice. The event was held at the House of Lords and organised by the Lord Sheikh and H.E. Mr Javier Esteban Figueroa, Ambassador of Argentina. On March 31, Ross also attended a panel event on international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians during siege warfare, held at the Swiss Ambassador’s Residence in London.
