On 23 March, ELAC Visiting Fellow of Practice Nina Donaghy hosted a screening of her documentary for Al Jazeera English at London’s Frontline Club with a panel discussion by Redress.org. Her film gave exclusive behind the scenes access to the first ever war crimes trials for Syria held in Germany and to the covert evidence gathering programme inside Syria led by her ELAC colleague Ambassador Stephen Rapp. The historic trial convicted Assad regime Colonel Anwar Raslan for crimes against humanity on 31 January 2022.
Raslan’s conviction could be a first step toward more comprehensive accountability for the Syrian regime, an increasing number of high-ranking military officers begin to be arrested and charged across Europe
The in-depth look at this landmark case is reported by Nina Donaghy and filmed on location in the UK and Western Europe. It was broadcasted on Al Jazeera’s People and Power.
