ELAC Co-Director Janina Dill has been quoted on multiple media outlets in relation to US President Donald Trump’s statement on the US taking ownership of Gaza. Across the platforms, Dill’s response has stated that any occupation by the US in Gaza will break international law.
In a Washington Post article, Dill was quoted as saying Trump’s proposal would violate the “most fundamental principle of international law, which is the prohibition of aggression.”
“If the United States takes over Gaza in the way that Donald Trump describes, it would be an occupying power,” Dill said. “Transferring the population out of the territory would be a war crime, and transferring its own population into the territory would also be a war crime,” she added.
Similarly, on Middle East Eye, Reuters, New York Times, BBC Verify, and Monitor, Dill confirmed that under no circumstances is it permissible to seize territory by force and that as an occupying power, Israel cannot legally cede Gaza to the US.
