IPS Hosts Policy Roundtable on Mainstreaming Atrocity Prevention in Foreign Policy

Dec 8, 2022

On 8 December, our Programme on International Peace and Security (IPS), in partnership with Protection Approaches, hosted a policy roundtable to launch the report of IPS Visiting Fellow Dr Cecilia Jacob on foreign policy and the promotion of human rights for atrocity prevention. The report examines the relationship between human rights and atrocity prevention, and shows the importance of developing a clear foreign policy strategy on atrocity prevention that foregrounds human rights. It examines the cases of foreign policy actions to address atrocities in Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Ukraine to identify short-comings, opportunities and practical limitations for foreign policy actions of states to prevent atrocities. Finally, it presents a series of recommendations for states to consider in the development of national atrocity preventions strategies. Speakers included Dr Kate Ferguson, Co-Executive Director of Protection Approaches, and Kirsty Sutherland, IPS Visiting Fellow of Practice.
