Janina Dill Holds Workshop Law and Ethics of Nuclear Deterrence

Nov 5, 2022

On 4-5 NovemberELAC Co-Director Janina Dill held a two-day workshop titled Law and Ethics of Nuclear Deterrence. This was the first of three conferences that will be part of the two-year long project of the same name, which is co-hosted by ELAC and the Centre for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) at Stanford University. The project is funded by the MacArthur Foundation and one of four research projects on nuclear deterrence that regularly come together as the Rethinking Nuclear Deterrence Research Network, which is hosted by the Belfer Centre at Harvard University. For the first conference, Scott Sagan (the co-PI) and Janina Dill brought philosophers, lawyers, political scientists and nuclear security experts to Oxford to revisit old debates and chart new ground on how to think about the prevention, permissibility and implications of nuclear use and deterrence in the twenty-first century. The next conference will be held at Stanford in early 2023.
