Myanmar Crisis: Report of House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee Cites IPS Written Evidence

Jul 16, 2021

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons has published its report The UK Government’s Response to the Myanmar Crisis, citing written evidence submitted on behalf of IPS by Federica D’Alessandra, Kirsty Sutherland and Henry Wu in response to the Parliamentary Inquiry on the Myanmar Crisis. Aligning with IPS’ recommendations were the following measures recommended by the House of Commons: that the UK Governmentfreezes the Tatmadaw’s supply of arms and encourages regional actors to take firmer measures to help halt ongoing violence; that cooperation with the National Unity Government should be contingent on continued and unequivocal support for different ethnic groups in Myanmar; and that current events should not overshadow efforts to bring about justice for the Rohingya, and accountability for past human rights violations. More specifically, that the UK government considers an intervention in the ongoing International Court of Justice case on the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar).
