IPS Contributes to Report ‘Inquiry on Crimes Against Humanity in North Korean Detention Centers’

Jun 22, 2022

On 22 June, the National Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK), in partnership with the International Bar Association (IBA), released a report, titled ‘Inquiry on Crimes Against Humanity in North Korean Detention Centers,’ on crimes against humanity committed at North Korea’s detention centers. The landmark report finds there is a reasonable basis to conclude Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and other high-level North Korean officials should be investigated for crimes against humanity committed in North Korean detention centers. The report was authored by four international judges, Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay (Inquiry Chair, South Africa), Silvia Fernandez (Argentina), Dame Silvia Cartwright (New Zealand), and Wolfgang Schomburg (Germany). ELAC Deputy Federica D’Alessandra and IPS Visiting Fellows of Practice Kirsty Sutherland and Shannon Raj Singh contributed to the report. The report was released as the result of a grant that Federica, among others, obtained from the US Department of State during her tenure as co-chair of the IBA War Crimes Committee, and which was continued and completed under IPS Visiting Fellow of Practice Sareta Asraph’s tenure in the same position.
